Gao Liu, Battery Innovator, Honored by Alma Mater for Excellence in Chemistry

Michigan State University (MSU) honored Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) battery design expert Gao Liu with an Alumni Award in its 45th annual ceremony, celebrating excellence among faculty, alumni, and students.
Liu, who earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the university in 2001, is now senior scientist and leader of the Applied Energy Materials Group at LBNL. For more than 20 years, he has explored the intersection of synthetic- and electro-chemistry and systems engineering to uncover new tools and materials for energy storage and conversion. Today he is author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and 28 granted patents.
Liu maintained close ties to his alma mater through long-term research collaboration with MSU chemistry professor Gregory Baker until Baker’s passing in 2012, and afterward through mentorship of MSU chemistry department students.
