Liu Named Electrochemical Society Fellow

Gao Liu, leader of the Applied Energy Materials Group within the Energy Storage and Distributed Resources Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), was recently named to the Electrochemical Society's 2022 Class of Fellows. 

Established in 1989, the Fellows of the Electrochemical Society (ECS) is a body of renowned scientists and engineers chosen for their scientific achievements, leadership, and service to the society. As part of this year's class of 15, Liu has been recognized for his contributions to the fundamental understanding of the functions of the polymer binder in composite electrodes and his pioneering work on the multifunctional electrode binder concept and applications for lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. 

A member of the Berkeley Lab community since 2001, Liu's current research focuses on the development of materials for battery and energy storage — from silicon materials, electrode binders, and electrolytes for advanced lithium-ion, lithium-sulfur, and solid-state batteries to electrode interfaces. His work, research, and expert insights have been published in professional journals as well as popular media, including Science Daily, the New York Times, Innovation and R&D magazines, and BBC News.

Liu will receive the Class of Fellows honor as part of the 242nd ECS meeting this October in Atlanta, Georgia.
